Peru: Tia Maria Mining Project Protests Turn Violent

Demonstrations on Wednesday against the Southern Copper Corporation’s mining project, Tia Maria, in the Arequipa region of southern Peru turned violent, with clashes between protesters and police. Four police officers were seriously injured in the disturbances. This follows the death of two demonstrators protesting the US$1.4 billion project, which will reportedly have a negative affect on local communities. The protests are now in their 46th day. teleSUR
