Nepal earthquake 2015: Google exec among 2,000 killed in one of Nepal’s worst earthquakes ever

An estimated 2,000 people fell victim to a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Nepal on Saturday. Nepal has declared a “state of emergency” after a massive earthquake hit just 80 km northwest of it’s capital city Kathmandu.

The earthquake, with it’s epicenter at Lamjung, Nepal, hit early Saturday afternoon and was followed by at least fifeteen aftershocks. The 7.8 magnitude quake was the result of a thrust fault between the India plate and the overriding Eurasia plate.

The latest reports estimate the death toll to be more than 2,000. At least 4,700 have been reported injured.

An estimated 1,000 people were on Mt. Everest for the early hiking season he when the quake triggered an avalanche. An Indian army mountaineering team has recovered 18 bodies so far.

Among those killed in the avalanche on Everest was Google executive Dan Fredinburg.
