Statue of Liberty bomb threat: no explosives found after security sweep

The Statue of Liberty was declared safe after a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of thousands of visitors from the tourist attraction on Friday.

The National Park Service received a 911 call threatening to blow up the Statue of Liberty at around 11 a.m. on Friday, Reuters reported.

A sweep by the canine units detected a possible suspicious package inside a locker for visitors near the gift shop area, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The NYPD bomb squad joined the investigation and examined the locker but found it was empty, CNN reported.

About 2,700 visitors were evacuated from the island during police investigation.

"We are working with NPS to reunite passengers with their belongings left behind as a result of today's events," Reuters quoted Mike Burke, vice president of Statue Cruises as saying.
