Honduras Prosecutor Uncovers Social Security Fraud, Flees Country

Public Prosecutor Roberto Ramirez Saldana, who was investigating fraud in the Honduran social security and health care system, fled the country last Thursday, following multiple death threats against him and his family. Many feel he was coming too close to endangering the interests of some of the country's rich and powerful. In his investigation into the social security system from 2011 to 2013, Ramirez detected the theft of US$6 billion. The former director of the institute, Mario Zelaya, is currently in prison. According to Ramirez, some of the funds were diverted to an unnamed political party. Many believe the party in question is the ruling National Party of which Celaya was an active member.
