Rare Volcanic Lightning Bolts During Calbuco Volcano Eruption

Footage from the eruption of Chile’s Calbuco volcano showed the rare phenomenon of volcanic lightning, or dirty thunderstorm, in action as plumes of lava, fire, and rock were interlaced with flashes of lightning charges. Volcanic lightning is believed to happen as a result of the release of static energy when red hot rocks slam into each other and discharge the energy in the form of powerful lightning bolts
