Katya Lidsky answers a question on the misconceptions about shelter cats and if they are considered damaged. She gives tips on how to see past how frightened a cat may be in the environment of a shelter and how to see a true cat's best self.

00:00Hi, I'm Katya Lidsky, and this is The Cat Connection.
00:04Today we're going to talk about shelter cats.
00:11I've heard that there's something wrong with shelter cats, that they're messed up.
00:16I want to get a cat, but I don't want to go to a shelter. Where else can I get one?
00:20People might think that shelter cats have something wrong with them, or that they're damaged,
00:26but nothing could be further from the truth.
00:28There is nothing wrong with cats from shelters.
00:32Often, cats in shelters are nervous, they're afraid, they're uncomfortable,
00:38they're in small cages, and they don't show their best selves.
00:43But if you were to adopt a shelter cat and bring him or her home,
00:47you would see their personality come out and bloom.
00:52Animal shelters get so many dogs and cats coming in all the time.
00:58Adopting a cat from your local shelter, a county shelter, a city shelter,
01:03is such an important part of the solution. It's such a great thing to do.
01:08If you're at the shelter and you're looking at cats, a great thing to do is talk to a volunteer
01:13who knows the cat, or a staff member who's been spending time with them.
01:17They can tell you a lot about the cat's personality, maybe where they came from.
01:35This has been another episode of The Cat Connection.
