Hunter and his father were abandoned in a lake bed near Joshua Tree, California, where they were discovered months later. Both dogs were in horrible condition. The Morongo Basin Humane Society took them in and nursed them back to health. Hunter's father, Boomer, was later adopted, leaving sweet Hunter behind. Hunter who had little to no human interaction during his time on the lake bed is slowly learning to trust and love again.

00:30These two dogs were out on the lake bed.
00:32It was bitterly cold.
00:34There's no food out there, and the rabbits all seem to disappear in the other life.
00:38And we have very, very high winds here.
00:40We used to have a saying in England, a lazy wind.
00:43They don't go around you, they go through you.
00:45They are bitterly cold.
00:47And the winters can be very harsh out here.
00:50♪♪
01:05They were in pretty poor condition.
01:07They wouldn't have gone much longer, I don't think.
01:09♪♪
01:14We took them a dog house.
01:15We took them blankets, food and water.
01:17Scotty even stayed out and made a bonfire so we could warm up rocks for them.
01:21And they used them.
01:22So it took a while, but we got them back here.
01:24Pretty much everything you could imagine that would be wrong with these dogs were.
01:27They had parasites, ear infections.
01:29They were severely malnourished.
01:31They were dirty.
01:32They had ticks.
01:34You're excited for ice, huh?
01:36We'll get you some water in a minute.
01:39Those very critical months where he was growing up and learning what the world is,
01:43when he was out there on the lake bed.
01:45He didn't know what treats were, what pets were.
01:49Everybody's scary to him.
01:51♪♪
01:58He discovered that blankets were actually kind of nice,
02:00and he was just rolling around in it.
02:02So it's great to see those moments of discovery with him,
02:04especially after seeing him come from not knowing what anything was.
02:07Yeah.
02:09What's up, Cyan?
02:11Looking cute, though.
02:12He's really a great dog.
02:15He prances when he sees you.
02:17He's wiggly.
02:18He does jazz hands is what I call him because he'll jump up,
02:20and he won't actually jump on you, but he does this thing and dances around you.
02:24He's like a big puppy still.
02:26He has that heart and that spirit,
02:28and it's just that you have to let him trust you before you get to see it.
02:34If he would show what we get to see when people come through,
02:37I have confidence that somebody would have been able to get past
02:41that he might need a little house training.
02:44Hunter is absolutely irrefutably a survivor.
02:47Holding back is just another fight.
02:50One day we'll get him to the other side of that, too.
02:53Hunter, there he is.
03:17Yeah.
