Iraq: The battle for Ramadi

A military jet has been filmed firing on Ramadi, as the city below is in the throes of a power struggle.

The plane, believed to belong to US-led coalition forces, was reportedly firing on ISIL positions in the Iraqi city.

Local authorities report the militant group is gaining ground in the region. They say ISIL has captured a number of the city’s surrounding villages, leading locals to flee.

Lying around 100 kilometres to the West of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Ramadi is the capital of Anbar Province and is strategically important to the extremist group.

Baiji

Meanwhile, an ISIL video has been released purporting to show a violent attack on the town of Baiji, some 200 kilometres to the north.

Home to Iraq’s largest oil refinery, the town has been fought over for months, although local officials now say the militants have been pushed back.
