A pair of boy scouts from Davis County, Utah chopped down a tree that led to the deadly accident involving a motorcyclist on Saturday afternoon.

The Boy Scout troop reportedly had permission to cut down trees for firewood near State Route 12 in Garfield County. One of the trees fell into the road just as Edgar Riecke, 69, was passing by on his motorcycle.

According to reports, Riecke was wearing a helmet and obeying the speed limit. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Riecke was a retired research scientist living in Durango, CO.

Allen Endicott, a Boy Scout Executive, released a statement saying the “events were a tragic accident… In Scouting we strive to make every effort to provide a safe environment for all that are involved, both Scouts, leaders, and the public.”
