Umbrella as a defensive weapon: to only be used in a tight spot according to kung fu master

If you’ve ever seen Jet Li fend off 20 men in “Once Upon a Time in China” you know that an umbrella can be used as a deadly weapon! But hey, that’s Hollywood, what about in real life situations?

Here, Hong Kong-based Kung Fu Master Chen, shows how you can easily block, parry, and attack an opponent just as long as your umbrella is sturdy enough. When used correctly it can even fend off swords. Umbrellas can also be used as a club against attackers, but why keep it simple?

The umbrella can also be wielded like a spear and its long reach can keep aggressors from getting too close. There’s also that handy hook at the other end you can use to grab and twist your opponent’s arm, disarming him in the process.

James Bond baddies have used it to hide swords and Bulgaria’s secret service once used it as an air rifle to fire a ricin pellet into a target! Even the Philippines’ secret service were also once trained in the deadly art umbrella combat!

Impressive as it may be, Master Chen explains that an umbrella is still best used as a defensive weapon, for when you’re caught in a tight spot. After all, it isn’t part of a typical martial artist’s preferred arsenal.

Nevertheless, don’t underestimate the humble umbrella, it isn’t just there to keep the rain away.
