Police harassment: 90-year-old man arrested for feeding homeless in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A 90-year-old Florida man is looking at up to 60 days in jail for feeding the homeless in Fort Lauderdale due to a new law that makes sharing food a citable offense.

Arnold Abbott was handing out meals to homeless people in the park on Sunday when police arrested him. Abbott now faces up to $500 in fines and might have to serve jail time for his charitable deeds.

Abbott, along with two other ministers of the Sanctuary Church, were all arrested and charged. The church cooks hundreds of meals in their kitchen every week to hand out to the needy.

“One of the police officers came over and said ‘Drop that plate right now,’ as if I was carrying a weapon,” Abbott said.

He added: “These are the poorest of the poor, they have nothing, they don’t have a roof over their heads. How do you turn them away?”

The new city regulations say that groups need to be at least 500 feet away from residential properties and food sites are restricted to one per city block. So basically, the rich old people just don’t want to see homeless people by their nicely manicured lawns.

Abbott is planning on suing the city and says he’ll continue with his charitable ways.
