Lava burns house: flow emerging from Kilauea vent reaches rural home

Visually, what you are witnessing is a flow of hot lava oozing from a vent in the Kilauea volcano and reducing a 1,100-square-foot structure to a pile of smoking ash.

Since June, molten rock has slowly crept toward Pahoa and, aside from cemetery and garden shed, had yet to claim a man-made structure -- until now.

Metaphorically speaking, lava burning down this house is a perfect reminder of what we have lost by what we have gained. Of how we often mortgage our freedom in exchange for that lovely home with the perfect view.

It’s reminder of how we can never really triumph over nature. That everything is -- in the final analysis -- reduced to ash.

But most importantly, it’s a reminder of how you should really invest in volcano insurance if you happen to live close to one.
