At least 14 people have been injured after a gas explosion at the Hyatt Regency’s The Churchill hotel in London, ambulance officials say.

Police said the explosion occurred in the kitchen area of the hotel on Portman Square just before midnight on Saturday. The hotel was evacuated following the explosion. At the height of the incident, about 500 guests were evacuated.

London Fire Brigade said the explosion happened around 11:40 p.m. in the basement of the hotel, causing part of the building to collapse.

Dennis Luwer, who lives across from the hotel, said a hole was blown in the side of the building about two meters high and a meter wide.

Five hotel staff were injured and taken to the hospital, including two with leg injuries. Another nine people were treated for injuries at the scene.
