A 12-year-old boy shot by police outside a Cleveland recreation center when he reportedly reached for his toy gun died of his injuries on Sunday, the medical examiner’s office said.
Officers were called to Cudell Commons on Saturday when the police received a call that a person was wielding a gun and scaring others with it. After arriving at the scene, the officers ordered the boy to raise his hands.
The boy, Tamir E. Rice, reportedly lifted his shirt to reach for a pistol he had tucked in his waistband, prompting one officer to fire at least two shots. Tamir was struck in the stomach and died early Sunday morning at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
The man who made the police call told the dispatchers that the gun was ‘probably fake’, but the two officers, one of them a rookie, were not informed.
This incident took place as the nation awaits the grand jury decision on whether to charge the white officer who shot and killed a black teen in Ferguson, Missouri in August.
The family of the deceased boy has hired an attorney to investigate the case independently as police investigations are ongoing.
