Kean University blows $219,000 wad on circular Chinese conference table

New Jersey’s Kean University has a really big new conference table that can seat 23 people, and it only cost $219,000 so far. The university has authorized up to $270,000 for the custom-made, circular conference table that features data ports, microphones and an illuminated map of the world in a glass panel at its center.
Kean University hired a Shanghai company to make the table because it’s currently really keen on kissing some serious Chinese government butt, as the school recently established a branch campus in China financed by the Chinese Communist Party.
Now Assemblyman Joe Cryan is hopping mad, complaining that the table is a complete waste of taxpayer money. “I don’t need a study to know a university shouldn’t be spending up to $219,000 for a conference table. I already know it’s wrong. So do the students and families struggling to afford a higher education.”
In May, Kean’s governing board gave a $200,000 contract to Shanghai Rongma Office Furniture Ltd, for the design, construction, transport and installation of the table. But the table didn’t fit, so they had to authorize an additional $70,000 to change the diameter and improve the lighting.
