Venezuela prisons: inmates at David Viloria penitentiary center die from drug overdose

At least 13 inmates died from drug overdoses after they stormed a prison pharmacy, Venezuela’s government has said.

Disturbances broke out at the David Viloria penitentiary center on Monday as inmates gathered to start a hunger strike demanding better living conditions and the expulsion of an appointed director.

Officials said the prisoners later became violent and started breaking down walls and doors in the facility. They then ingested drugs obtained from the pharmacy, which included antibiotics, antihypertensive drugs, anti-diabetic agents, anti-epileptic drugs, and alcohol.

The Venezuelan government reported 13 deaths and 145 hospitalisations from the drug misuse, while the Venezuelan Prison Observatory counted 33 dead and 135 intoxicated, disputing the official version of the story.

The National Guard was stationed outside the prison as up to 720 prisoners were transferred to other prisons.
