Authorities at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are investigating the death of a dolphin found washed up on Orange Beach, Alabama over the weekend.

Investigator have released a photo which shows the dead animal with a yellow-feathered arrow protruding from its side.

InItial results from a necropsy suggest the dolphin might have held onto life for five days before it succummed to an infection cause by the arrow attack.

Dolphins are a protected species, yet this is the second violent killing of one in recent weeks. The agency is also investigating the death of a pregnant bottle nose dolphin found dead on Miramar Beach, Florida from a gunshot to the lung. A fetus was discovered in the animal’s womb.

At least 17 dolphins have been found dead from gunshots since 2002, the agency says. It has reminded people to help protect dolphins by not feeding them, as this can can encourage them to approach danger.
