Living with HIV: 8-year-old boy ostracized by everyone in his hometown except for his grandparents

In a small village in China’s Sichuan province, the entire village of 200 people has signed a petition to banished an eight year old boy named Jia Jia.

Jia Jia looks like any other eight year old child, but the villagers are afraid of him.

Three years ago, when Jia Jia fell down and had a serious injury, his grandfather took him to the hospital for stitches. His family got an unexpected surprise, Jia Jia’s blood work came back as HIV positive.

Jia Jia was most likely born HIV positive but didn’t know it. His father and mother met when they were both working in Guangzhou, after Jia Jia was born his father brought him back to the village in Sichuan to be raised by his grandfather. Jia Jia’s grandfather said that he has tried contacting his son and daughter-in-law since Jia Jia’s diagnosis, but there has been no response from the boy’s parents.

Jia Jia’s grandfather has said that since then all the villagers have avoided his grandson, often telling their children not to play with him and shop owners often yell at the boy for touching things.

So Jia Jia spends a lot of time playing by himself and enjoys setting fires in isolated areas.

Jia Jia’s grandfather says he and his wife are too old to move to another village and start over. He also does not believe in sending his grandson away from the only home he’s ever known.

The village leader says that Jia Jia’s disease is dangerous, therefore by extension the boy is dangerous.

For the time being, Jia Jia’s grandfather intends to ignore the villager’s petition. He says that he and his family have their legal rights and will not move until legally forced to.
