US-Cuba relations: President Obama hopes to lift embargo against Cuba

U.S. President Barack Obama’s groundbreaking decision to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba on Wednesday after more than five decades has won equal amounts of applause and criticism.

While many Cubans celebrated the release of the prisoners, some had reservations about normalizing relations with the United States.

Following the announcement by President Obama on Wednesday, the United States will reestablish relations with Cuba, opening an embassy in the capital Havana.

Under the agreement, the United States released three Cuban spies in exchange for the freeing of an intelligence agent who had been imprisoned in Cuba for almost two decades.

Meanwhile, American credit and debit cards will be allowed to be used in the island country, while the permitted amount of remittance every three months will be raised from $500 to $2,000.

The American government will allow exports of certain items, such as building materials and telecommunications equipment, to Cuba. Meanwhile, licensed American travellers will be able to import up to $400 worth of Cuban goods, including tobacco and alcohol.

However, Obama’s hope to end the decades-old economic embargo against Cuba will have to be approved by the Congress. It faces an uphill battle as Congress is now controlled by the Republicans.
