Flesh-eating bacteria: Japan suffers record number of cases of deadly disease in 2014

Winter has arrived and with it seasonal colds.
But this year, according to Japan’s National Infectious Disease Surveillance Center, there has also been an increase in the number of strep throat cases in Japan.
The bacteria that causes strep throat is called A streptococcus bacteria, it also causes inflammation of infected tissues, high fevers, and vomiting.
But the thing about streptococcus A is that it is also the same bacteria that causes necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as the flesh-eating disease.
Roughly 30% of those infected with it die. If the bacteria is able to enter the bloodstream it can lead to organ failure and necrosis of a patient’s extremities, such as their arms and legs. Hence the name “flesh-eating bacteria.”
According to Japan, this year alone there have been 263 people infected with the bacteria, the highest on record.
Most patients are elderly or those with compromised immune systems. So it you are suffering from a high fever or have pain in your extremities, it’s recommended you seek emergency medical attention immediately.
