CDC Ebola: Lab error may have exposed Atlanta technician to Ebola

A lab technician at Atlanta’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus due to the mishandling of virus samples, will be monitored for 21 days, US health officials said.
Authorities fear the potential exposure occurred as two sets of fluid samples from guinea pigs infected with Ebola were prepared at a high-security CDC laboratory in Atlanta.
The set containing live Ebola was transferred to a lower-security laboratory unequipped to handle the pathogen. The technician working on the sample wore only a gown and gloves and did not use a face shield.
In June, the CDC committed another error by sending live anthrax samples to a lower-security laboratory. Dozens of workers were at risk, but none were infected.
The agency also mishandled another sample in May. What was supposed to be a benign flu sample became contaminated with a H5N1 bird flu strain and was sent to a laboratory of the Department of Agriculture. The CDC was only informed of the incident two months later.
The CDC has been lambasted for the spate of recent blunders handling dangerous pathogens. CDC Director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden said a full review into the incident will be launched.
