AirAsia QZ7633: flight aborted as auxiliary power unit experiences problems in the latest glitch

Panicked passengers refused to reboard an AirAsia Indonesia flight after it experienced a power unit problem before takeoff on Saturday.

En route to the Indonesian city of Bandung, AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ7633 was scheduled to take off from Juanda International Airport in Surabaya at 9:00 p.m. Saturday.

The aircraft, an Airbus A320 carrying 120 passengers, was taxiing for about three metres before takeoff when passengers heard a loud noise, causing panic.

The budget airline said the aircraft encountered problems with its auxiliary power unit, which automatically shuts down if it detects overspeeding or problems with oil pressure or the oil filters.

The jet returned to the apron for repair work and was ready to fly again an hour later. But most passengers refused to reboard the plane. They received a refund from AirAsia instead.

The latest glitch came just one week after the crash of AirAsia Indonesia flight QZ8501, which resulted in 162 deaths.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of AirAsia Group, lambasted the Malaysian press on Twitter for their ‘sensational’ headlines and said the engines of QZ7633 did not stall.
