This past Saturday, Indian police arrested five men in connection with the alleged abduction and gang-rape of a 23-year-old Japanese tourist.

The woman was studying rural life in India when she encountered the men in late November of 2014. She was then kidnapped, taken to a secluded room in Bodh Gaya and raped several times. She was then forced to transfer her money to the men, and then raped once more.

After she fell ill due to the abuse three weeks later, the men took her to a doctor, where she made her escape. Another Japanese tourist found her and took her to the Japanese Consulate office in Kolkata.

This case is just the latest in a string of crimes against women that have rocked India.

The country had a long history of turning a blind eye to sexual violence, but since the crimes have been brought into the international spotlight, reforms have been implemented, including doubling the maximum sentence for rape to 20 years along with officially criminalizing stalking and human trafficking.
