Paris shootings: Charlie Hebdo’s most controversial covers poked fun at every religion

While Parisians gather en masse to show support for Charlie Hebdo, the satirical magazine involved in the shooting that took twelve lives, others have been less supportive of the publication.

The Financial Times wrote in an editorial: “Charlie Hebdo has a long record of mocking, baiting and needling French Muslims… too often editorial foolishness has prevailed at Charlie Hebdo.”

Charlie Hebdo does have a history of angering Islamic fundamentalists -- in November 2011, a firebomb damaged the publication’s office building, in response to a cartoon cover depicting Muhammad as that week’s guest editor-in--chief.

But a look through the publication’s most shocking covers reveals that no one is safe from Charlie Hebdo’s satirical snare.

Even before Charlie Hebdo was Charlie Hebdo, the publication got in trouble with the French Interior Ministry. Hara-Kiri, Charlie Hebdo’s predecessor, released a cover in November 1970 that made light of a former French President’s death. As a result, the magazine was banned.

The magazine sidestepped the ban by switching its name to Charlie Hebdo, but it ceased publication in 1981.

In 1992, it resumed publication and provocation. Since then, the magazine has unapologetically poked fun at Jews, Christians, presidents and celebrities.

The Pope was targeted in 2010, for flip-flopping on birth control. He can be seen holding a condom and saying “this is my body,” a reference to communion.

He was featured again after he resigned in 2013, on a cover that says “finally free!” where he’s shown tenderly holding a Vatican guard.

The magazine also went right to the source of Christianity with a cover that showed Jesus hanging from the cross and yelling: “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!”

The uncompromising cartoonists recognized their trend to offend, with a cover that depicted all three religions uniting to say: “We must veil Charlie Hebdo.”
