Catherine Cando, a 19-year-old medical student from Ecuador, died after a supposedly routine liposuction procedure last week.
Ms. Cando was the winner of her local beauty contest and although she won, judges told her that she was fat and could stand to lose a few. To help her with that, among her prizes was a free liposuction procedure.
Catherine’s brother, Daniel Zavala, said that she’d decided to lose the weight through exercise. She’d been considering giving away the liposuction procedure, but the doctors kept calling and hounding her to go through the cosmetic surgery.
So almost half a year later, Catherine decided to go ahead and have the procedure, with tragic results. Her family was told she’d died of cardiac arrest, but the lawyers heard that it was from a brain oedema.
As an investigation into her death is underway, the doctors involved have all been arrested to stop them from fleeing the country.
The clinic may have pressured Ms. Cando into the procedure so that they could have the claim to fame of having operated on a local celebrity but now they’ll have the reputation of killing a beautiful, smart, young woman.
