Amazing surgeries: man’s foot saved after doctors temporarily attach it to his thigh

Doctors in Taiwan have successfully saved a man’s foot by temporarily attaching it to his thigh for 7 days using reconstructive microsurgery and a procedure called temporary ectopic surgery.

The patient, Mr. Lu, suffered a severe car accident last year while driving from Taipei to Pingtung during a routine delivery. He was exhausted and briefly dozed off at the wheel, then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the cement median.

When Mr. Lu awoke, it was to see his left foot and calf inches away from his own face. The limb had been completely severed in the crash.

When Mr. Lu was rushed to emergency services at National Cheng Kung Hospital, doctors were forced to evaluate whether or not they would be able to save the limb. The head cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Li, felt that the limb could be saved, since Mr. Lu was just 28 and young enough to heal, the question was if the limb could be kept alive long enough for Mr. Lu to heal from his other injuries.

So Dr. Li and a team of surgeons attached the severed limb to Mr. Lu’s left thigh, while other surgeons repaired the damage to the stump of his left leg.

This way the foot would be kept alive by the blood vessels from Mr. Lu’s thigh.

A week later, the surgeons felt that Mr. Lu’s condition was stable and after a 5 hour surgery, were able to detach his left foot from his thigh and reattach it to the stump of his left foot. Three months later, Mr. Lu was up and walking about with the aid of crutches.

Dr. Li states the concept of saving a severed part of the body by attaching it to another part of the body to give it a blood supply is well recognized.

Thankfully, the doctors didn’t have to attach Mr. Lu’s foot to his forehead. That could’ve been awkward.
