Bus driver burns and murders female Turkish student Ozgecan Aslan who resisted sexual assault

The vicious murder of a 20-year-old female psychology student sparked nationwide protests demanding that the Turkish government to do more to stop violence against women.
The burned body of the student, Ozgecan Aslan, who had been missing for two days, was found on February 13 in a wooded area in the Tarsus district of the southern province of Mersin.
Aslan was first reported missing by her mother when she failed to contact her on February 11. She was last seen boarding a minibus from Tarsus to her home in Mersin.
Authorities have arrested three men in connection to her death. Ahmet Suphi Altindoken, 26, the minibus driver, his father Necmettin Altindoken and Suphi's friend Fatih Gokce.
According to investigators, once Aslan was the sole passenger in the minibus, Altindoken stopped on a secluded road and allegedly tried to rape her. She tried to defend herself using pepper spray and was fatally struck on the head with an iron bar and stabbed to death.
Altindoken allegedly received help from his father and Gokce to dispose of the body by burning it near a riverbed.
On February 12 police stopped the minibus when it failed to follow its normal route to Mersin and discovered blood stains and a hat inside, which was identified by Aslan's father as hers. All three suspects were arrested. Aslan's body was found the next day.
The brutal crime caused an outcry across Turkey, where thousands of women have rallied to show their anger at Aslan's murder.
According to local reports, violence against women in Turkey has risen in the last decade. Last year alone, almost 300 women were killed at the hands of men.
