Sexually assaulted former Air Force captain Jamie Brunette driven to suicide, family say

Family members of an Air Force Reserve captain who apparently committed suicide earlier this month believe she was sexually assaulted during her time in Afghanistan.

Tampa, Florida police found former Air Force Captain Jamie Brunette’s dead body in the back of her locked sedan near her apartment on February 9th.

They say the 30-year-old bought the suicide weapon, a Smith & Wesson .380, six months ago.

Brunette had been on active duty for 11 years before joining the Air Force Reserves last June.

Jackie Leverich, Brunette's oldest sister says she noticed something was different about Brunnette while they were both attending their sister's wedding.

While she doesn’t have any proof, Leverich, who’s on active duty with the Coast Guard, says she believes her sister was sexually assaulted while she served in Afghanistan.

Two weeks before her suicide, Brunette ended her relationship with her boyfriend.

The week before her death, Brunette seemed in good spirits and posted photos to Facebook, of the fitness studio she was building. Friends and family say she was excited to be a owner/instructor of her new business venture.

While he failed to provide details, when referring to a possible incident, Brunette’s business partner, Lt. Col Kurt Spranger, told the Tampa Tribune that “something happened, something that should never happen to a human”.

A ‘Go Fund Me’ page has been set up for Brunette’s funeral. To provide support, visit: https://www.gofundme.com/mbspsk
