Chinese ship bound for Cuba with cargo of illicit arms detained in Colombia

A Hong Kong-flagged ship loaded with eight containers of unreported ammunitions has been detained in Colombia.

The Da Dan Xia, a transport ship registered in Hong Kong, was stopped in the port of Cartagena on Saturday.

During an inspection, officers found about 100 tonnes of gunpowder, more than 2 million detonators, 99 projectiles and around 3,000 cannon shells. The ship's captain, a Chinese national named Wu Hong, was arrested.

Colombian authorities said the vessel was scheduled to travel to another Colombian port, Barranquilla, before arriving at its final destination, Havana, Cuba.

The vessel is operated by Cosco Shipping, a subsidiary of China's state-owned China Ocean Shipping Group, which has not responded to media enquiries.

Colombian authorities said the ship declared the container contents as chemicals and spare parts. Local reports said the designated recipient of the shipment was the procurement branch of the Cuban military.
