Bribery in the military: Xu Caihou admits to accepting bribes to purchase military positions

After an insider and a former officer of the People’s Liberation Army in China exposed that at least two vice chairmen of the Central Military Commission (CMC), Xu Caihou and Guo Boxiong, had been buying and selling military positions, Xu has been under investigation and Guo retired to escape the limelight.

Xu was put under state investigation for corruption in March of 2014 and was kicked out of the Chinese Communist Party in June that same year. He has since been arrested on charges of buying and selling military positions.

Xu explained that everyone in the military knew the unspoken rules and that, for example, a rank of General would cost at least USD $1.6 million or more and a rank of Colonel would cost USD $160,000 or more.

At least 20 other officers were sacked in 2014 after investigations and many believe that Guo, despite his retirement and attempted escape, will be the next former officer under investigation.
