Accidental abortion: Black market sonogram accident causes couple to terminate healthy baby boy

In China, there has long been a lot of pressure to have a son in order to pass down the family name and the country’s one-child policy has only made things worse in recent decades.

In order to fix the magnified issues, China’s government passed a law years back making it illegal to use a sonogram to predetermine the gender of an unborn fetus.

And of course, as with all things illegal, a black market exists to fill in the demand for this procedure.

A unidentified couple from eastern Jiangsu province desperately wanted to have a son and contacted several doctors and clinics in an attempt to find someone who would tell them the gender of their baby before birth.

After visiting two clinics willing to perform the illegal procedure, the couple was told that the fetus was female.

Disheartened by the “bad” news, the pair opted to go ahead with an abortion, only to later discover to their horror that they had aborted a perfectly healthy baby boy.

As revenge or perhaps maybe just out of spite, the couple reported both clinics’ illegal activities to authorities. By then, one clinic had seemingly vanished into thin air, but the other one—including the female technician who had performed the sonogram—weren’t as lucky.

The unidentified technician was arrested and charged by local police.
