US officer killed in shootout with Afghan soldier

An American officer has been killed in a shootout with an Afghan soldier in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan, according to a US official.

NATO confirms one of its soldiers died in the attack, but policy dictates it does not reveal the nationality of the victim.

US-based reports suggest the Afghan soldier opened fire on a group of American troops in the city, injuring a handful of others before he too was shot dead.

An Afghan soldier is reportedly being questioned in connection with the attack.

The shooting took place near the compound of the provincial governor in Jalalabad. It came shortly after a meeting between some of Afghanistan’s provincial leaders and a US Embassy official.

The Embassy confirmed all its staff were accounted for and had been safely returned to their mission headquarters.

Fall in ‘insider attacks’

The frequency of so-called ‘insider attacks’ in Afghanistan has seen a sharp decline in 2015 since most foreign forces withdrew in 2014.

Some 12,000 NATO troops
