Cute owl chick in captivity: Taipei City Zoo a fluffy new mountain scops owlet

Hei-mei is the first hand raised Taiwanese mountain scops owl. She was discovered abandoned by some hikers 20 years ago and donated to the Taipei City Zoo.

The zoo has more than one owl and they have to be careful how closely they nest the birds, as they tend to be territorial. Particularly if they’ve got chicks.

Hei-mei’s caretakers were always hopeful that she’d eventually breed and help the shrinking population of her species, but despite being paired with male owls on more than one occasion, she hasn’t laid any fertile eggs.

It wasn’t until this year that one of Hei-mei’s eggs finally hatched and it’s thanks to a recent newcomer, a male owl zoo keepers have named Ai-lan. Ai-lan is a temporary placement at the zoo as he was injured a few months ago and brought there to recuperate, who knew the two would get along so well?

The chick is about a month old and within the next two months should be ready to leave the nest and provide the zoo keepers as well as the public a closer look at their most recent fluffy addition.
