An Air Canada Airbus A320 plane that crash landed in Halifax on Sunday suffered heavy damage after it landed short of the runway and hit power lines and an antenna array, safety officials said. The aircraft also lost its landing gear in the accident.

No one was killed in the accident. However, more than 20 passengers and crew were sent to hospital for treatment.

"They touched down 1,100 feet (335 meters) short of the runway, so I'd say they're pretty lucky," Mike Cunningham, an official with the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) of Canada, told a news conference.

Cunningham added that it was too early to draw any conclusions about the accident, and that weather has not been ruled out as a factor in the crash.

The Air Canada flight was traveling from Toronto with 133 passengers and five crew members when it crash landed shortly after midnight Sunday.

The company said although there was heavy snow at the time, the weather was appropriate for a landing.
