Islamic State fighters have seized most parts of the Yarmouk refugee camp on the outskirts of Damascus, according to reports, placing the terrorist group just a small distance away from the centre of the Syrian capital.

The Palestinian refugee camp Yarmouk has an estimated population of 18,000.

Free Syrian Army fighters and members of Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis, a group of Palestinian militants opposed to the Syrian government are leading the fight against the IS fighters, according to the BBC.

An alliance of Islamist groups recently captured Syria’s northwestern city of Idlib and announced that the city would be run according to sharia law, according to Reuters.
