Documents reveal Ecuador was part of CIA counter-insurgency program

A recently declassified CIA document reveals that Ecuador, like many countries of the Southern Cone, was part of the U.S.-sponsored Operation Condor, a counter-insurgency program implemented from the 1970s to the mid-1980s. Ecuadoran military intelligence shared information with the dictatorships of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay and endorsed state-sponsored terror to control what was perceived to be the threat of communism and eliminate leftist movements and activists. The Ecuadoran Attorney General's office is currently investigating whether the 1981 plane crash that killed progressive President Jaime Roldos was part of Operation Condor and has asked Washington to declassifying its documents on the case.
