Farmers’ Markets Not As Beneficial To Urban Environments

In a study led by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, researchers found that the nearby farmers’ markets in Bronx, New York, were not equivalent replacements for produce sections in grocery stores because they had limited operating hours and the fruits and vegetables offered tended to be more expensive, exotic, and limited in variety.

Farmers’ markets are often thought to provide a great selection of fruits and vegetables that are healthier, cheaper, more locally grown than the produce section of the nearby grocery store, but that may not always be the case. 

In one study led by researchers from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the markets located in Bronx County, New York were found to be more similar to food boutiques that offer a limited selection at higher prices.
