Gecko Skin Repels Water With Tiny Spines

Researchers in Australia have discovered that geckos’ skin contains water-repelling spines in its scales that help keep the skin dry and bacteria-free.

Geckos have long been studied for the sticky properties of their feet, but scientists have recently discovered another high-performing area of their bodies.

According to research led by the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia, the lizards’ skin contains special structures that help the animal stay dry.

This self-cleaning quality, which the team has termed “geckovescence” is thought to deter disease by keeping the skin free of moisture which is needed by bacteria and fungi to grow.&
