Synopsis: Maya Among the Stars was written for the traveler interested in Mesoamerican culture. Combining travel experiences with anthropology, the book is based on some constellations that were forgotten by the Maya and recovered by the author between 1994 and 1996. His recovery was inspired by Maya Cosmos (1993) by David Freidel, Linda Schele, and Joy Parker. These authors suggested that Maya civilization was guided by an Olmec template, but they did not say what the template was. Pursuing the question, the author discovered that the template was a group of constellations, which were created by the Olmec 3500 years ago. The constellations became models for every aspect of Mesoamerican culture. Like maize agriculture, they were a cornerstone of Mesoamerican civilization. The images related to maize agriculture in many ways, and were incorporated in the traditional Maya house. The author proposed alternate interpretations of evidence in Maya Cosmos and continued his search for constellations. He identified constellations on Izapa Stela 25, a monument from an important Preclassic archaeological site located near Tapachula, in Chiapas, Mexico. The finding was followed by his discovery that all the images on the monument, including some that were not constellations, were replicated at the Tikal ceremonial center, in the Peten jungle of Guatemala. Completed by Yik’in circa A.D. 740 according to the plan of his father, Hasaw-Ka’an-K’awil, the Tikal ceremonial center was essentially an image of the Olmec template. The sacred complex represented all the celestial images except the Scorpion. Ten were in the architecture and two were in burials beneath one of the temples. The Tikal ceremonial center is the author’s strongest piece of evidence. Its twelve celestial images confirm that his interpretations of Schele’s evidence are correct. When the author lived in Mexico and Guatemala for nearly four years between 2001 and 2010, he could see that the images were an integral part of the daily lives of contemporary Maya. Over time it became clear that the people who were using them as the result of following traditions had forgotten their origins. Based on the celestial imagery, Maya Among the Stars presents a new perspective in Mesoamerican anthropology.
