At the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s the Palestine Liberation Organization intensified its terrorists attacks on Israel. The conservative government under Prime Minister Begin decided to invade Lebanon where the headquarters of the PLO were located. The Israel Defense Forces successfully defeated the PLO and the Syrian forces based in Lebanon. The PLO was forced to leave Beirut towards Tunis and Israel occupied the south of the country for a few years.
