EGYPT SENTENCES BLOGGER TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON
An Egyptian court sentenced blogger Alaa Abd el-Fattah to five years in prison on Monday February 23, over an unauthorized street protest in November 2013, and apparently attacking a police officer during the anti-government demonstration. The ruling has been met with widespread condemnation online with web users urging the authorities to release the blogger, who was also one of the public faces of the 2011 popular uprising that removed Hosni Mubarak from power.
Many have taken to social networks, voicing their anger and outrage over the Egyptian court ruling. The majority describing the whole case as a judicial farce and reaching out to the powers that be, calling for Alaa Abd el-Fattah`s sentence to be overturned. Web users the world over have shared and retweeted the message, under the #FreeAlaa hashtag.
Social networkers are also asking NGOs and the international community to join the campaign, a number of messages have been posted to Twitter, urging political leaders from across the globe, and also organizations like Amnesty International to redouble their efforts in securing the jailed blogger`s immediate release.
And while the focus is on Alaa Abd el-Fattah, web users are also pointing out that he is not the only one to have been handed a hefty prison sentence in this trial. His 24 co-defendants received sentences ranging from 3 to 15 years in prison. Social networkers have slammed the verdicts and hope their online campaigning will help obtain the release of all the detainees.
