Behind the Scenes of The Old Doctor

Agence : The Mill

In the final episode of the 3rd series of Doctor Who, the Master punishes the already captive 100 year old Doctor by aging him further to his full 900 years, because of a bungled escape attempt. The brief was to design and create a CGI version of the 900 year old Doctor and make him look sad and vulnerable. He wanted the audience to really empathize with the character and for the character to be quite cute as well.

The Mill worked with David Tennant in a green screen studio to capture both his physical and facial performance, they used Maya, XSI and custom developed system, R.U.T.H (Roto Utility Tracking Hub) to track his facial expressions and lip sync. The sound takes for the Doctor’s dialogue were immediately selected by the director, Colin Teague allowing the Mill to use the exact correlating data for facial expressions and lip sync to go with the sound.

The animators used a lot of reference of David Tennant acting as the Old Doctor to achieve the final performance. This also gave the animators the chance to really finesse the animation and get the subtle nuances of an extremely old person.

It took six 3D and four 2D artists working for approximately 2 months to complete the work.
