UFO Toy

This helium filled silver mylar balloon toy looks a bit like an Unidentified Flying Object, or UFO. Tim has his own helium cylinder (of course!) so it is easy for him to top up the gas whenever required. However mylar balloons (they are normally silvery in colour) retain the helium gas much better than normal balloons. Helium is a tiny molecule, and it can escape quite quickly from a normal balloon - the tiny molecules can actually pass through the rubber of the balloon!

This toy was called Flinger, and by placing tiny reflective decals around the edge (little pieces of reflective plastic) you can achieve neutral buoyancy, i.e. the toy does not float up into the air (and you lose it) and nor does it sink to the ground. So when you give it a spin and send it whizzing through the air, it continues on a level path for a long time! Works best indoors though.

This toy was originally patented in 1993, by a US company called Flings Inc.
