He is calling it a government of consensus.

The President of Haiti is promising to announce a new government within the next 48 hours to stave off a political crisis.

Parliament was dissolved on Tuesday as the mandate of MPs ran out; no elections have been held in three years.

President Michel Martelly spoke to an audience of political leaders and the foreign diplomatic corps in Port-au-Prince.

He said: “I am open to starting a true, constructive dialogue with the opposition and involve them from this moment on in the government until the end of my term.

The political uncertainty over the past week has led to protests by the opposition.

Last minute negotiations to reach a deal on extending the mandate of parliament had come to nothing.

New elections are due before the end of the year.
