On Monday morning, crews in Aspen, Colorado worked to save three elks that had fallen into a pond. The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office posted about the rescue on Twitter.

There, medics from Aspen Ambulance, Aspen Fire and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials were credited for their roles in trying to get the animals out of the frozen pond.

At about 8:50a.m., all three elks were shown in the freezing water, nestled between patches of ice. The rescuers were on the side of the pond attempting to pull one out while the others contemplated how to save the remaining two.

Roughly 35 minutes later, the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office used social media to confirm that one of the elks had been successfully rescued.

Just a few minutes later, officials said all three elk were out of the water but one had passed away. At this time, it is uncertain how long the elks had been in the frigid residential pond before the rescue efforts began.
