On the streets of Dhaka, thousands of Bangladeshi Muslims celebrate the birthday of the last of God's messengers.

They're marking the birth of the Prophet Mohammad, generally considered by Muslims as the last envoy from God following earlier prophets like Jesus.

The celebration is observed across this mostly-Muslim nation with religious fervor and solemnity.

(SOUNDBITE) (Bengali) SYED MAINUDDINN AHAMED, AN ISLAMIC LEADER SAYING:

"Today we are celebrating the birthday of our beloved Prophet Hazrat Mohammad. We are gathered to mark the day, we will pray to God for peace of the world, for the Muslims and also for a terrorist-free world."

Local media say various Islamic organizations are also set to hold peaceful processions across the country.

They're among the many millions of Muslims across the world celebrating the prophet's birthday.
