Crossroads of the Continents: Diaspora Shaped Cape Verde

Presented by Carol Castiel Founder & President of the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project During the mid-19th century, a group of Moroccan Jews immigrated to Cape Verde, an archipelago of ten islands off the coast of Senegal, to escape deteriorating economic conditions and pursue new opportunities. The Jews prospered in Cape Verde through international commerce, shipping, administration and other trades, and were often considered pillars of the local economy.  To honor the memory and to document the legacy of the many Sephardic families and their descendants in Cape Verde, WMF is partnering with the Cape Verde Jewish Heritage Project to survey archives in Cape Verde and Portugal, as well as conduct interviews with descendants. Join us to learn more about this work and the important history of Cape Verde's Jewish community. This project is made possible with support from The David Berg Foundation.
