Haitians protest on Independance Day

New Year's Day in Haiti -- thousands in Port-au-Prince call for President Michel Martelly to resign.

Protests in recent weeks have already forced the resignation of their Prime Minister.

Demonstrators say their government is corrupt.

(SOUNDBITE) (Creole) GERARD GILLES, EX-SENATOR FOR FANMI LAVALAS PARTY, SAYING:

"Today we see that only a minority holds all the wealth and that the majority is still suffering."

Also at issue is three years of delays to elections.

If they're not held before January 12, parliament will shut down, leaving the country without a functioning government.

Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world, and is still struggling from a devastating earthquake five years ago.
