It's a Roman tradition like none other.

Several men take part in the annual Tiber river dive to ring in the New Year, braving frigid waters with nothing but a speedo.

While some took a more elegant leap..

Others got straight to the point.

Diver Maurizio Palmulli says the plunge invigorates him with hope for the year year.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) VETERAN DIVER MAURIZIO PALMULLI, KNOWN AS 'MISTER OK', SAYING:

"The message that we want to give every year, it's been 27 years, this is the 27th dive that I have done here, is that Rome is tranquil and peaceful. All the Roman families, it's our best wishes for them, and also in all Italy, in all the world, a wish for peace for everyone, because we all need it - and for us, the only thing we can do is this."

Rescuers were on hand to quickly scoop up each diver before the next took the leap.
