Mother of British ferry passenger relieved son is alive

After a 36 hour operation on stormy seas more than 400 survivors have now been plucked from this stricken ferry in the Adriatic.

Officials say most of the 478 people on the ferry travelling from Patras in Greece to Ancona in Italy were Greek. But they also came from several other countries, including Germany, Italy and France.

British horse trainer Nick Channing-Williams and his Greek fiancee lost each other during the rescue.

But his mother was relieved the ordeal was finally over.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) MOTHER OF NICK CHANNING-WILLIAMS A BRITISH PASSENGER RESCUED FROM GREEK FERRY, DOTTIE CHANNING-WILLIAMS, SAYING:

"It just got worse, and worse, and worse. And I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know how they were going to get them off because they said the weather was too bad. They couldn't get in close enough. They couldn't use the helicopters. And then there was films of all the fire. It was very, very scary."
